How did we do this past season?

In the Western Collegiate Roller Hockey League our Division I team tied for 3rd place with University of Nevada Las Vegas and took 4th place at our regional event. Our B Gold team placed 2nd place in the WCHRHL and took 2nd place in a heartbreaking overtime nail biter against Arizona State in regional play. Our B Blue team also had a very successful year and took 6th place in the WCHRHL B Division.

Our Division I team and our B Gold Team were invited to play in the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Championships this past April in San Jose. Our Division I team was competitive, but ended up going 1-3 playing against Connecticut, Eastern Michigan, West Point, and Hofstra. Our B Gold team was very successful and made it all the way to the semi-finals and lost a heartbreaker against Central Florida.

Due Fees This Season
$475 for Division I
$425 for B Teams

Here are some BIG changes!

We are pleased to have Coach Anthony Zermeno and Jack Noe as head coaches for our Division I roller hockey season, but don’t worry……Coach Nielsen will still be behind the bench cheering everyone on still. We are very grateful and eager to see what we can accomplish this year.

We have a “Hockey House” again! 6621 Sabado Tarde in IV

We are looking to really branch out into the community and get more communication between ourselves and the leagues going on at Earl Warren Showgrounds.

We will be hosting another clinic in late March with Peter Dale from USA clinics. The clinic is mostly for ages under 18 and is a lot of fun for children and young adults at all skill levels. So make sure to be on the lookout for the clinic in March and make sure to let our young future hockey stars know about the clinic. Remember, they are the future of our sport.

In conjunction with the LA Kings we will be hosting a roller hockey tournament on our campus. This is an event we really wanted to put on this past season, but due to scheduling difficulties we couldn’t fit it in. People can form their own teams, it will cost approximately $35 a player and that cost will INCLUDE a ticket to a Kings game verse either the Anaheim Ducks or the San Jose Sharks! Everyone will get a ticket to the same game at Staple Center and more information will become available as the season progresses. It looks like we will have a lot of interest from our club, San Luis Obispo’s club teams, and our Alumni.

Alumni Game was successful this past year, but we are really going all out this next year to try to get our alumni out. The past Alumni game will be scheduled further away from holidays this year, so there are no excuses not to make it out! The Alumni kicked our butts this past year, but we will see if those “old guys” still got it.

Tryouts
September 17, 2007

Another summer is over and that means, for some, returning to Isla Vista for another year of Gaucho Hockey. As usual, the informational meeting will be held following the Fun and Fitness Festival. This years meeting will start at 7:00 pm and we will have a pick-up game following the meeting so be sure to bring your gear. The meeting will be in Rec Cen 1501 (the classroom by the rink). Tryouts will be held September 29 and 30 from 12:00pm to 2:00pm on both days. There will be a tryout fee of $10.

Hopefully all of you have had a great summer and see you on the rink next week.

The Beginnings of the 2007-2008 Season
June 29, 2007

A new season is in the organizational stages as club members are beginning work on everything from registering the D1 and B teams for league to working on getting the equipment that never came last year. Last season saw the D1 team not ever able to have the puck bounce in the right direction for them, B Blue missing the playoffs by one game, and saw B Gold team reach the Elite 8 at Nationals in St. Louis.

The informational meeting will be held after the Fun and Fitness Festival on September 26. As usual, a pick-up game will follow the meeting.

Tryouts will be held on the weekend of September 29 and 30. The times are still tentative but the tryout will last for approxamitely 2 hours.

Hope to see everyone in the fall and that you all are having a great summer.

IMPORTANT: Physicals
January 2, 2007

Physicals need to be completed by the end of the first week of winter quarter. We urge you to try and complete your physical while you are at home during your winter break. If you are unable to do that, then you NEED to get into Student Health or some other doctor's office and complete your physical as soon as you return to Santa Barbara. I forget the exact price for the physical, but I think Student Health was extremely reasonable (and they BARC the fee I believe). So if you are unable to get it done at home, Student Health will be just fine.
There is a specific form that needs to be filled out by the doctor. If you do not have this form get in contact with Sean Seal and he will get a form to you. Please get this done, it is extremely important and if you fail to get a physical the school will not allow you to play.

Registration packets will also be collected during the first week of the quarter as well. So please work on completing the registration packets along with the physical. We will also let you know how much you owe as far as equipment and/or league fees.

I hope everyone has had a great break up to this point and safe travels to everyone as you go back up to school.

MJ

2006-2007 Season at Half Way Point
December 6, 2006

All teams have finished their playing for the first quarter. For the DI team, the first half was full of coming up short. Games were lost or tied that should have been won if it weren't for bad bounces or decisions made at the end of games. Following a 2-1-1 performance at their last tournament in Davis, CA, the DI team looks to turn things around during the second half.

Both B teams have participated in two tournaments and have faced off against each other twice. The series is tied between the two teams with a win and a lose for each. B Gold comes out of the first half of their season with a 4-4 record, while B Blue has a 2-6 record. Both teams have been playing very well and look to continue their accomplishments into the second half of the season.

To those that did not make a roster, thank you very much for trying out for the team. We will keep your information and if a spot opens up on a team we will let you know to see if you are still interested in playing. We encourage you to play IM's this year and we hope to see you next year at tryouts.

Also, cages are now required for IM's and practice (they are already required in WCRHL games). We have had a couple injuries too many and don't want to see anyone else getting hurt due to not wearing a cage on their helmet.

Option 2: $90/team however the non-students will not be allowed to participate in any other IM sports/ Open rec.
*As a side note, all teams MUST pay this year, considering last year half of you guys “forgot”. Teams that do not pay by the end of the quarter will be Barc-ed. Anyone who is interested in becoming a hockey ref Contact Me

Once teams have been decided, the team managers (goalies) must attend a mandatory manager’s meeting in the Rec-cen Classroom 2103 Monday October 10th @ 5pm. Keep checking the message board for info on deciding teams and feel free to ask me or Jimmy if you have any Q’s.

UCSB Hockey Enters Transition Period
August 11, 2005

The end of an era has arrived. Recently our president of three years Jon Tu graduated and subsequently rode off into the sunset. Please note that he was also the one who maintained this website, thus the comical 10-month lag in updates.

Jon's retirement marks a time of transition for UCSB Hockey, as a committee of returning players decides how to divide the responsiblities of running our large club. That's right, it will take anywhere from three to six club members to do the work of one surly mongolian.

Rest assured, though, that this new era looks promising. The club is currently in the process of finding one or more coaches for the coming season, an addition that is sure to add much needed focus and discipline to the team's run-and-gun style of play. Also, with the new indoor rink in the MAC fully operational, the quality and amount of practice time looks like it will increase dramatically. These and other factors should contribute to a season of improvement in 2005-2006.

Also, please have patience as we find a new brave soul to shoulder the responsibility of maintaining Jon's complex work of art known as our website. News and updates are coming soon!

For those in the area this summer, we will be skating 5 days a week (M-F) and have the rink from 5-7:30pm. Do your best to make it out as often as possible. This is open to new players as well as returning players, so get your gear on and let's skate.

Interview with Vince Gotanda (Class of 2001)
September 29, 2004

The many faces of Vince...

As a four year member of UCSB's A team from 1997-2001, Vince Gotanda brought heavy doses of physical play and dependable defense, as well as a legendary ability to do anything at anytime. Known far and wide as a great guy to have on your team and the last guy you want to play against, he was also affectionately known as "Momma Vince" during his last year as a Gaucho, having taken over the position of team president as a senior. Vince was also a classic case of a bi-polar hockey player - there's never been a friendlier guy off the rink, but when his skates hit the floor it was lights out time so long as you were wearing a different colored jersey. There have been many fresh faced rookies who regret wearing a different colored jersey to practice while Vince was playing.

We here at UCSB Hockey were delighted that Vince agreed to this interview, but upon receiving it we realized that "Diesel" was a man of few words. So, in an effort to paint a better picture of the man various alumni and current players wrote in with stories, recollections and anecdotes about him. You can read these at the bottom of the interview....

Name: Vince Naoki Gotanda

Years Played: 1997-2001

Position: Defense

Year of Graduation: 2001

Degree: Business Econ. w/ an Accounting Emphasis

Current Location: Los Angeles

Current Occupation: Fund Accountant

What are/were some of your nicknames while you played here? There were a couple. VD, Diesel, V Go, Goatassa, Goat, and Lance. Actually that last one was given to me by Dave Glass. It was our first season playing together, but we were at practice, and about half way through the season. In a scrimmage, while calling for a pass, he calls me Lance. Don't really know where that came from, but we all got a good laugh.
