2/12/04 - Sunday 2/15 practice cancelled. Have a good three day weekend. Tuesday 2/17 practice still on.

2/11/04 - I took a tour today with the rest of the RecCen Governance Board of the RecCen II construction site. Thanks to Wayne Horodowich for organizing the tour and giving us all the information.

The site is amazing. This new facility is going to be huge. More to come later, but for right now, I've posted a link above to the pictures I took on the tour.

2/9/04 - The B team wrapped up its season this past weekend in its final tournament at Davis, CA.

It's been a long year for these Gauchos, 2003's WCRHL B division champions. The season began auspiciously when after a huge turnout for tryouts two B squads were formed. After the first tournament, though, one team folded and the remaining players gathered together on the other squad. With a record of 1-11 going into Saturday's tourney, their hopes for a postseason appearance relied on a possible 4-0 sweep coupled with a 0-4 performance from Davis B.

With the news of CSU Monterey Bay's B team forfeiting the tournament, though, those hopes were dashed as the forfeit gave Davis B the lone win it needed to knock the Gauchos out of contention. The team would soldier on though, fighting tenaciously in its first game of the day against the Aggies. UCSB and UCD would be tied at the end of the second, only to have Davis break open the scoring enroute to an eventual 9-3 win after Santa Barbara was penalized for eleven of the twelve minutes of the third period, including a 4 minute 4-on-2 double minor penalty kill. The questionable officiating combined with a potent (and very long) Davis power play that left the Gauchos with a 1-1 record thus far.

It looked as if that record would quickly change to 1-2 after Cal Poly SLO B Gold jumped on the Gauchos to open up a 6-2 lead going into the third. Down four goals and faced with a very talented SLO squad, Santa Barbara would roar back with four straight unanswered goals, led by senior forward Loren Cogswell and backed by the outstanding goaltending of senior netminder Christian Jones. The story of the game was written clearly for all to be seen in the way the two teams played in the last minute of play: with just a handful of seconds left, Gaucho senior forward Sean Gillespie had two scoring chances in a mad last second scramble. Although Gillespie did not score, it showed that if given one more period Santa Barbara would probably have walked away with a win.

The B team would finish the day by completing their swing around and crushing CSU Monterey Bay A 11-4. The Gauchos controlled the game with skill and patience, barely allowing the Otters out of their own zone and pelting Monterey Bay's goalie with shot after shot. Dominating both physically and in terms of puck control, the B team put on its finest performance of the year, capped by two goals from goalie Mike Lovato (who skated out during the game) and a hat trick from junior defenseman Pete Culberson.

Congratulations to the B team for their 2-1-1 record at Davis. Although they expected more out of this season, they ended it strongly and on a high note. Look for the B team to reload and come out firing in 2004-05.

And to our seniors, thanks go out to you guys for all the hard work you've put in. Congratulations, and good luck to you in your future endeavours:

Loren "Smiley" Cogswell, Forward, 2000-04
Sean "Monkey" Gillespie, Forward, 2003-04
Christian "Old Man River" Jones, Goalie, 2002-04

2/3/04 - The UCSB Hockey 2000-01 Yearbook has been added to the Pictures section. You'll be able to take a look at pictures from the 2001 CRHL Nationals at Upland, CA, where Santa Barbara went 3-0 in round robin play versus the University of Michigan, Colorado State and Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), the eventual 2001 CRHL National Champions. The Gauchos would eventually be knocked out in the first round against the University of Central Florida in one of the most controversial games in Nationals history. Click below to check out the pics!

1/22/04 - The Gauchos return to school having gone a disappointing 0-3 in round robin play during NARCh Winternationals in Las Vegas. The WCRHL in general had a poor showing, with only CSU San Bernardino moving on to elimination play out of a total of five Western teams. The Coyotes would get eliminated in their first game.

UCSB lost to Missouri-Rolla 2-3, in a game that saw three Miner goals in the first half followed by less than three Miner shots in the second half. The Gauchos came out flat and it hurt them all game long. Though they would dominate the second period with puck movement and physical play, UCSB would not be able to overcome their sluggish start.

In one of the worst losses in recent memory, Santa Barbara would bow out 0-8 to eventual NARCh Winternational champions Michigan State. The Spartans dominated the entire game with their passing and cycling. They were also helped out by more than a dozen penalty minutes assessed to the Gauchos in the first half, including a paralyzing double minor 4-on-2 powerplay in which the Spartans scored three goals. Overall, Santa Barbara was sorely outplayed in the first rematch between these teams since the 1999 CRHL national championship game.

UCSB gave up the first few goals to Moorpark College, came back within a goal and would eventually lose in a mad scramble to tie the game. Junior forward Derek Kokubun had both goals in the Gauchos' 2-3 loss. Santa Barbara will have some consolation, though, as they will be playing Moorpark again this coming weekend at the La Verne Hockey Club in their fourth WCRHL event of the year.

Overall, it was very apparent UCSB has work to do. Although they sit fairly comfortably within playoff contention, Las Vegas would show the Gauchos just how much they are going to have to work on before they can see Anaheim in April.

Thanks go out to all the UCSB families and friends who came to Las Vegas to support us. You may not have gotten a good show, but hopefully the buffet filled you up.

1/12/03 - Rob Wang, our athletic trainer, has moved from the Old Gym to the new office facilities on the south side of Harder Stadium. His room there is #1008, and he will be available Monday through Friday from 2-7 PM. Additionally, UCSB Rec Sports has the services of Jenny Bock, an intern from Chicago who will also be acting as an athletic trainer as part of Rob's staff during Winter quarter. Make sure you take advantage of this opportunity to treat injuries or help your rehabilitation process.

1/10/03 - The first ever official newsletter has gone out. You can read a copy at the Archived Newsletters section.

1/6/04 - NARCh Winternational schedule posted! You can take a look here: http://www.narch.com/attachments/wn04goldsched.pdf

UC Santa Barbara has drawn Missouri Rolla, Michigan State and fellow WCRHL member Moorpark College in round robin play. The schedule is as follows:

Friday Jan. 16, 9:20 PM: Missouri Rolla
Saturday Jan. 17, 12:55 AM: Michigan State
Sunday Jan. 18, 5:15 PM: Moorpark College

This will be the second meeting between UCSB and both Michigan State and Moorpark College. UCSB lost to Michigan State on a last minute goal in the 1999 CRHL national championship game in Chicago, IL. Santa Barbara tied Moorpark College earlier this year, 5-5. The Gauchos have played the University of Missouri-Rolla twice, going 2-0 against the Miners.

Elimination rounds will take place during Monday afternoon. All games will be held at the Crystal Palace in Las Vegas, NV.

(Editor's note: Thanks to Vince Gotanda for correcting an error above)

1/5/04 - Welcome back for Winter Quarter! Practices are now only Tuesdays and Sundays 8-10. We have very few practices before we start playing our tourneys, so get out there!

B team will be playing a tournament 1/10/04, so they will not be practicing Sunday night. A team practice will still be on, with limited 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 drills.

12/13/03 - Added Brendan Sheehay's pic to our Alumni Pictures.

12/3/03 - Fall hockey is complete. How did the Gauchos match up to their expectations?

For the A team it was a season of highs and lows, full of big wins and disappointing losses. The year began with the traditional WCRHL Kickoff in Upland and a 5-3 trouncing of Monterey Peninsula College, the first time these two teams have met. Chapman University would claim yet another late game win against the Gauchos in the second game of the tournament with a 7-9 squeaker with a last minute goal and an open net score. UCSB would rebound by defeating Berkeley 7-2 in a decisive game to conclude day one of the tourney. Day two would hold more disappointment for the Gauchos as they couldn't pull out a win against powerful visitor Colorado State, though not for lack of trying. The Rams would eventually win 7-4 in a very physical game but not before UCSB would make a statement with their puck movement and speed.

Santa Barbara's second event of the season, a traditional road trip to northerly Sonora, would prove to be much the same. Opening the tournament with a disappointing loss to rival Cal Poly SLO, the Gauchos could not climb out of a hole they dug for themselves with sluggish and sloppy play and lost 2-6. The day worsened with a 4-6 loss to Chico State, made the more painful in that the last two goals came in the last two minutes of regulation. One high point of the game, though, was the inspired physical play of the smaller Gauchos against the traditionally tough Wildcats. With two losses coming into the game against impressive Division III newcomer Moorpark College, things were not looking good for the team. Santa Barbara would rally, though, with some more dominating physical play and impressive puck control to squeeze out a 5-5 tie. They would end the day with a nailbiting 6-5 win over surprising UC Davis, who earlier upset Cal Poly SLO 10-6.

The third event of the season, at Huntington Beach's Coast 2 Coast, would spotlight the Gauchos as one of the best teams in the WCRHL. Opening up with back to back 9-1 victories over Berkeley and visiting Arizona State, the Gauchos would head into their highly anticipated matchup with last year's Division I National Champions Cal Poly Pomona (who were riding a seven game win streak at the time) with momentum. They carried that momentum into the game by opening up a lead over the stunned Broncos 7-2 at the end of the second period, and would hold off a furious late game rally from Pomona to preserve a huge 7-5 win. Unfortunately, the Gauchos would suffer the loss of junior defenseman Derek Kokubun from an ejection, and both senior defenseman Greg Franks and junior defenseman Jonathan Tu were injured in the game. That would prove to be enough to allow Chapman University another win over UCSB in the last game of the event, 5-7.

Some outstanding players from the first half of the season were sophomore forward Gordon Jack, junior defensemen Greg Snelling and Derek Kokubun, and sophomore defenseman Yu Matsumoto. Both freshman goalies, Jason Green and Sean Seal, have turned in some great performances. Overall, the season thus far has been a success, with UCSB sitting comfortably in fourth out of an eleven team field. The Gauchos face three tough upcoming tournaments, though, with rematches against Pomona, SLO and Moorpark as well as an eventual showdown with powerful Cal State San Bernardino. They will also be one of sixteen teams chosen to represent the NCRHA at the 2004 NARCh Winternationals at the Crystal Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada, where they will play the best that collegiate roller hockey has to offer. The season is far from over, but for right now, Santa Barbara can rest assured that the first half of the year has gone well.

12/3/03 - Alumni section restructured and added to. There's a new Nicknames section now.

11/30/03 - The NCRHA has just released the official NARCh Winternational field of teams. Read it here at http://www.ncrha.org/newsroom.php?articleid=147

The WCRHL is represented by an excellent field with the league's current top five Division I and III teams. Last year's Winternational champs Michigan State will try to defend their crown from fifteen of the best collegiate roller hockey teams in the nation. This should be a great preview of the NCT action that will take place during April in Anaheim. Stay tuned to www.narch.com and www.ncrha.org for more info.

11/25/03 - B team Pictures from Corona added.

11/23/03 - Practice has been cancelled due to player incompetence.

For all current players: this is the last time something like this will happen. If you cannot make a practice at all you WILL call at least an hour beforehand to inform me (Jon), Greg or Loren. We understand you have things to do - but you should have those things done before practice. Additionally, in the event that you absolutely cannot practice you owe it to other players to inform the team captains so that no one ends up at the rink with nothing to do but drive home again.

There will be no practice until Sunday 11/30. Enjoy the holiday and spend the free time taking care of things so that practice Sunday will not be entirely made up of skating drills.

11/23/03 - For any of our B team players who want to go with us to Las Vegas for Winternationals Jan. 16-19, you need to tell me if you'll be driving with us and/or staying with us by Sunday, November 30 (the Sunday after Thanksgiving).

I need this information for planning on transportation and hotel rooms. FYI, we will most likely be leaving for Vegas on Thursday, Jan. 15 and coming back to Santa Barbara on Tuesday, Jan. 20.

11/20/03Alumni section updated. A list of current and former players has been added, but it's very incomplete. Are you missing from this list? Contact Us

11/19/03 - Added a counter. Started from zero tonight, so I guess it's gonna look kinda silly for a while... Oh well.

11/19/03 - New pictures have been added from Huntington Beach! Thanks go out to Mrs. Green for providing these wonderful pics...

Pictures section has been restructured. Due to storage space concerns, many of the albums have been moved to www.webshots.com - don't worry though, they'll still be accessible! As a bonus, these pics can now be enlarged to their full size.

If anyone out there has pics they want to see up on the site, email them to me at jonathantu@yahoo.com or jonathantu@umail.com

And yes Dino, you're in the new "Miscellaneous" section.

11/18/03 - It's official! UC Santa Barbara has accepted a bid to the 2004 NARCh Winternationals in Las Vegas. The Gauchos will be competing in the College Division during Jan. 16-19.

11/18/03 - Tuesday practice cancelled. Remaining schedule for next two weeks: Thursday 11/20, Sunday 11/22. No practice the week of Thanksgiving.

11/17/03 - Huntington Beach, CA - UCSB's third tournament of the year at Coast 2 Coast was filled with both expected and unexpected results. The first game of the event came against Berkeley. Cal was just coming off a surprising victory over highly ranked Division III power Moorpark College, having added depth to their roster with some recent additions. Santa Barbara would dominate the upstart Bears though, with freshman goaltender Sean Seal leading the Gauchos to a 9-1 victory.

Visiting Arizona State would fare the same as UCSB would again dominate in a 9-1 win over the Sun Devils. This was the first ever meeting between the two schools, as ASU is an out of conference team.

The big matchup of the day came in the third game when the Gauchos took on the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos. Pomona, the defending 2003 Division I national champions, featured senior forward Tom Wiebe and junior goalie Stephen Freeman, both standout players who lead their team to the WCRHL's first national title. Santa Barbara would start the scoring with an early goal by senior Mike Saksen in the first period, which was answered by Pomona right afterwards. UCSB scored the next two goals, with Pomona adding one more. After that, the game featured a surreal string of goals from both sides, with Santa Barbara having three scores on one shift (sophomore Gordon Jack had two of those) leading up to a seemingly insurmountable 7-2 lead in the third period. Pomona would bounce back with three goals to give the Gauchos a scare, but UCSB would hold on for the 7-5 upset of the Broncos. Seal again led the team to a win with outstanding goaltending despite several questionable goals.

The day would end with Chapman University, who has quickly come to be UCSB's newest hated rival. With junior forward Derek Kokubun out of the game due to a suspension and defensemen Greg Franks and Jonathan Tu limited due to injuries, Santa Barbara started the game on the wrong foot and would end up losing 5-7 in a heated and physical match.

UC Santa Barbara currently sits at 5-4-1 in league standings. The two outstanding players of the game were Jack and Seal, both of whom had great performances against Pomona.

The Gauchos are off until Jan. 16-19, when they will head to Las Vegas to take on teams from around the nation in the NARCh Winternational College Division.

11/3/03 - The Sonora trip is done! The annual eight hour road trip has been completed with a record of 1-2-1. UCSB's lone win came in a nailbaiter of a game vs. UC Davis, 6-5. After the first UCSB led 6-2 with some outstanding puck control, but the Aggies would claw their way back with three unanswered goals through the next two periods, culminating in a series of chaotic faceoffs. The Gauchos would pull off the win despite Davis's empty net.

Both of the losses came to rivals Cal Poly SLO and Chico State. SLO came out firing against the Gauchos, and though the game was close through the first half, the Mustangs began shelling freshman goalie Sean Seal. Cal Poly used good puck movement to stretch out the Gauchos, and offensively UCSB could not put the puck away. UCSB would eventually lose 6-3.

Chico State came out firing as well, racketing up two goals against Seal in what looked like the beginning of a blowout. The Gauchos would rally, however, and quickly score two of their own in answer. This game featured perhaps the roughest, most physical play Santa Barbara had seen since playing Colorado State in Upland earlier this year. Though Chico State was larger, the Gauchos did not back down at all, continually scoring goals until it was tied 4-4 late in the third. A blown call be a ref gave the Cougars a power play that they scored on, and they would add another as UCSB scrambled to tie the game.

The emotional victory of the long, long day came when the Gauchos tied Moorpark College. Though the Gauchos led once during the match, for the most part they trailed Moorpark throughout the game. In another rough game that saw UCSB dominate the physical play both in front of the net and on the boards, Santa Barbara would not relent. The Gauchos displayed perhaps their best puck movement of the day, stretching out Moorpark time and time again. Freshman goaltender Jason Green had perhaps the biggest game of his season thus far, facing dozens of shots and standing on his head to make sure Santa Barbara would walk away with a point.

Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Markgraf for their chili, their fruit, their encouragement, and a warm house to stay in. It was all much appreciated.
